Carnival of Darkness (FaeTAL #1) by Becca Moree

Carnival of Darkness (FaeTAL Series Book 1) by [Moree, Becca]

Title: Carnival of Darkness (FaeTAL #1)

Author: Becca Moree

Price: Free on Kindle $5.99 Paperback

Release Date: July 14, 2016

Description: Brett sold his soul to the devil. Only hell isn’t a fiery pit in the bowels of the earth. Hell is the Carnival of Darkness where the freak shows are real, the screams never end, and the girl of his dreams has become a part of his nightmare.

Charlee has been kidnapped by the freaks that run The Carnival of Darkness. If that weren’t bad enough, she’s harboring a secret that will put her life in even more danger should her captors find out. Now, she has a decision to make – keep her head down and wait on someone to save her, or fight to escape and get back to the ones she left behind.

Brett wants to trust Charlee with the reason he is working at the carnival, but she still has reservations about his intentions. Charlee doesn’t trust anyone, but Brett may be her only hope.

WARNING: This circus and the carnies within are FREAKS with extremely dirty mouths and minds that some may find offensive. COD is filled with dark, demented, horrific, depraved and disturbing things. If you aren’t into paranormal creatures as well as a bit of blood, guts and taboo things this book is not for you! (Trigger Warning)

Oh man. This book. It is DARK and demented. It is definitely NOT for the faint hearted or those that have trigger warnings such as abuse, rape and the like. I think Charlee is my favorite character outside Brett so far. She’s a strong woman who will do anything to protect her daughter’s life and secret while protecting her own secret as well.

The guys at the C.o.D are definitely freaks, minus Brett. I honestly think he’s going to have psychological damage going into the next book after everything he’s been through that we’ve read about in the book plus stuff we don’t know about!

I would highly recommend this book to those that like dark reads. My only issue with the book is that it’s so short at only 106 pages! 4*’s solid!

Scarlett and the Bear (Fairy Tales with a Shift) by Cara Wylde

Scarlett

Scarlett and the Bear is the next book in the Shift Your Fate series by author Cara Wylde. This fairy tale is a re-imagined telling of Little Red Riding Hood.

Scarlett is amazing at throwing her father’s hunting knives. She practices everyday and never misses her mark. While practicing one day, a strange man approaches her. He learns of the wolf-shifter and the hell he is putting the villages through. She lives in a place called “5 Villages”. All five villages used to have their own names but since being taken over by the wolf-shifter, they all are named collectively. Each year, a tribute of sorts, is chosen from one of the villages and this year is Scarlett’s villages turn.

All the eligible people gather in a group. The mayor spins all the names until he feels that they’re mixed up enough. He pulls out a name and it happens to be Scarlett’s. She is in shock while her mom begins wailing immediately. The men close around Scarlett so she can’t run but she’s too numb to think of doing anything.

That night, she is escorted into the woods. After they reach the clearing, she keeps walking on her own since the townsfolk are too scared to go any further.

This is a short book with around 60 pages. So it doesn’t take a long time to read. It’s a cute story although I thought part of it was rushed. I would have liked for a couple scenes to have been longer but it’s good the way it is. I love reading Cara’s works and this one is no different. I never have been a huge fan of Little Red Riding Hood but I do like her version.

Celine and the Bear (Shifting Impulse #2) by Aurora Woodlove

Celine

Celine and the Bear is the second book in the Shifting Impulse series by author Aurora Woodlove. This book features Ryan and Celine. Remember, we met Ryan briefly in the fst book as he is Adam’s twin brother.

Celine is having a birthday party at Shifting Impulse, the club, with her friends. Ryan’s bear was very close to the surface and had been all day. It was because of the flower scent he kept smelling. He knew it was his mates scent. He was at the bar that night and he caught a whiff of her from across the bar and knew instantly who the scent belonged too.

He talked to her that night but didn’t get her number. His bear was extremely close to surfacing so he got out of there. He called Janet, one of his bartenders and one of Celine’s friends, to get her number. He ends up surprising the living daylights out of Celine the next morning.

Their relationship is rocky through part of the book and then get stronger as it goes on, after a wee break.

————————————-

I liked reading this book. It didn’t seem like it flowed as smoothly as the first book in the series. There were a few spelling and editing errors but nothing major. A few simple adjustments and it’d be perfect. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series which is about Janet!

Bear Unbound (Shift Your Fate #1) by Cara Wylde

Bear Unbound

Amazon Description: Beautiful, curvy Amber is ready to reclaim her freedom. She’s had enough of her husband’s lies and she’s done with his family’s weird rules. She’s getting a divorce, and she’s taking her 8-year-old daughter with her. Oh, and she’s determined to stay away from men. For now at least. But her best friend, Rebecca, has other things in mind. She takes her to the one place where Amber can find what she’s truly looking for: Shift Your Fate. Instead of advising her to leave her past behind, the empath Kassandra reminds her there was someone else before her ex-husband, someone who could have made her happy, if only she had given him a chance.

Tyler Atwood lost contact with Amber ten years ago, when she married Stephan Castell. He had a choice to make then: tell her the truth about her husband, or step aside and leave them be. He chose the latter. Amber wouldn’t have believed him anyway. Bear-shifters? An Assassins’ Guild hunting supernatural people? On second thought, it was better if she never knew. Now, Amber is back into his life. Being with her puts both of them in danger, but how could he resist? She’s always been the only woman who could tame his bear.

Bear Unbound is the first book in the Shift Your Fate series of standalone novels. What you should expect: hot, steamy scenes, growly Alpha males, beautiful, curvy heroines, and well-deserved happily ever afters. Intended for readers 18+.

——————————————–

Amber is married to Stephan Castell and they have an 8 year old daughter together, Ava. Amber is tired of Stephan’s cheating and lying and the lack of treatment from him and his family. She leaves with Ava and goes to her best friends place in New York. Ava thinks they are on a mini-vacation shortly before school starts. Becca and Amber go out to lunch with Ava one day. Becca takes Ava home and suggests that Amber step into the office across the street and talk to Kassandra. Talking to Kassandra brings up Tyler, one of Amber’s old friends that she used to talk to and then they just quit.

Amber messages Tyler and it sets them off on a whirlwind of adventure and romance. But Stephan isn’t going to let Amber go without a fight. Amber wants nothing more than to be rid of Stephan but after she learns what Tyler says, how will she feel about Tyler as well? Or any of the others for that matter when other stuff comes to light?

————————-

Cara Wylde is no new author to me. I’ve read plenty of her books and always liked them. This one is no exception. Although, I do think that parts of this were rushed. I think there could have been more backstory on each of the characters as well. Overall, it’s still a good story. I can’t wait for the next book in the Shift Your Fate series to find out how this whole thing plays out.

I do like that on the Amazon page, it CLEARLY states that there are other books in the set and what they are. Too often authors don’t include there are other books in there and you are disappointed when you realize the story is short but there’s over 300+ pages. This story itself, in PDF format is 175 pages. It’s available for 99 cents on Kindle and free with Kindle Unlimited.

Anna and the Bear (Shifting Impulse #1) by Aurora Woodlove

Anna and the Bear

Anna and the Bear is the first book in the Shifting Impulse series by author Aurora Woodlove. This is her first book written as well. I was excited to read this since Aurora is a friend of one of my favorite authors and friends. I’m going to give my honest opinion here so please don’t kill me.

I think the book was lacking and rushed. It’s missing back-story of both characters and I felt we really needed backstory. Anna is definitely a damaged character but we don’t know why she is the way she is. She wants Adam and then pushes him away and then wants him and then pushes him away. Even though Adam doesn’t take no for an answer, he gives her a taste of her own medicine after they sleep together one night and she wants him to leave.

Adam wants nothing more than to take her back to his place and mate with her, making her his. Adam hides things from Anna but she forgives him. Like when she goes out to meet a client and ends up meeting Ryan, Adam’s twin brother. The way Ryan and Adam acted, I kinda thought it was going to turn out differently when it came to this part.

It’s pretty much sex from the beginning and Anna resisting Adam. The story is rushed which I felt could have had so much potential had it not been so short at only 72 pages. Overall, it’s an okay book. I would be interested in reading the second book in the series in the future and seeing how her writing progresses.

Alpha Breed: Werewolf Bikers by Amanda Close

Alpha Breed

2/5 🌟

Author Amanda Close is a new to me author. I came across this book being advertised as free in one of the many Facebook Book groups that I’m in. The title grabbed my attention and the cover drew me in so I purchased this book.

Brienne is a nineteen year old college student. She has a boyfriend back home in Macon, Georgia but decides she isn’t going to worry about him while at school. During summer break, she kept having these vivid dreams and would wake up horny as heck and would jump her boyfriends bones. After a month or so he got used to it. Then she went off to school and her dreams have settled down.

She’s at a frat party one night with her friends when a group of bikers pull up on their motorcycles. Brienne and two of her friends are searched out and go with them. They ride on the motorcycles for over an hour before pulling into a camping spot. Brienne and her friends are among two different motorcycle groups.

Roland and Arn fight each other until one can’t fight anymore for the right to claim Brienne. Roland wins that first fight but there are more to come down the road.

—————————————

This story is only 47 pages long so it’s a rather short read. I felt like it was too rushed and the author couldn’t wait to get this story over with. I feel there was so much potential to this story but the author didn’t want to have any of the potential touched on. I didn’t really feel the characters were realistic.

Normal price for this book is $2.99 for Prime members and free with Kindle Unlimited. Honestly, had I paid $2.99 for this book, I would have returned it and gotten my money back. I am glad I got it while it was free as I wasn’t out any money, only some time.

Please note I trust you to make your own decisions about this book. The opinions specified in this review are mine and mine alone. If you’ve read this book, please feel free to comment your likes/dislikes.

Assassin’s Touch (Iron Portal #1) by Laurie London

Assassin's Touch

Assassin’s Touch is the first book in the Iron Portal series by author Laurie London. It seems like a lot of books I’ve gotten lately, have only been filled with multiple stories with no claim to be more than what was advertised. So I was sure this book was going to be like that. It’s not. This entire book is this story with no others in it!

Laurie London is a new to me author. I really liked this book. The characters are well-built and not just flat.

Neyla is a Talent soldier on the Pacifican side of the portal. There are two sides: the Pacifican and the Cascadian although the Cascadian is referred to as the Barrowlands or Barbarians. (Really, it should be the other way around.) Since Neyla is a protection talent, she is automatically moved up the ranks in the Army and skips most of the grueling tests the others have to go through so they hate her immediately.

Her talent was discovered a year ago when she was riding on a train and bombs blew it off the rails. Everyone in her car lived and there was no explanation other than a latent protection talent was in there. Everyone was tested and it came back that Neyla was the Talent! This mission was to find a portal and stop any of the enemy who came through. Only that’s not quite how it worked out.

Smythe, another soldier, really hates Neyla and ends up pushing her over the cliff where she falls and lands on a ledge, unconscious. Unknown to her or the other soldiers, the portal is very close to that ledge and Rickert is hiding on the ledge in the shadows. He in instantly pissed that a soldier would do that to one of their own but to a woman no less. When Smythe gets down to the ledge, he doesn’t make it much longer as Rickert kills him and sends him over the ledge and down to the rocks below.

Rickert ends up taking Neyla through the portal. Instead of handing her over to Louis at the jail, he takes her to the castle and gives her his old room and he takes the one next to it. Things are tense between them before things come to light at the market one day. Rickert is a talent too and more than just a fire talent like they had always thought. But it takes Neyla to bring his other power out.

———————————–

This was a good book to read. It held by attention the entire time and I was longing for more! This story is different from other books I’ve read based on it’s type and the way it flows. There are “normal” people like us, ones perceived as “barbarians”, fata (magic) talents and so many more things that set this book apart from any others. I consider it a short book at only 175 pages but it’s a DAMN good 175 pages! I honestly have no complaints other than the length but hey, we all know I like really long books. 😀

Web Master (Shifter Squad #8) by J.C. Diem

Web Master

Web Master is the eighth book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem.  The books get better and better as they go! I was honestly stunned when I read who the main villain has been this whole time. And how long the treachery has been going on. I didn’t see it coming but once you learn who it is and realize stuff said and done in the last several books, it makes sense although it doesn’t add up on it’s own until you realize it! I laughed and cried while reading this book and was totally creeped out since there were spiders involved in this book. While reading it, I seriously felt like I had spiders crawling all over me.

I can’t wait to see where the ninth and final book of the series takes us when it’s released in March. I hope Lexi is able to succeed with her mission but right now, I’m not so sure that she’s going to be able to succeed. I’ll just have to wait and read the last book when it comes out later this year!!

———————

This book is full of treachery. The Track and Kill Squad is summoned to PIA Headquarters. This is unusual since only those with level eight clearance is allowed there. Everyone but Mark are all level fives. They make it to headquarters and are given a bunch of information on EERI buildings. EERI needs to be eliminated and who better to do it than the TAK squad. But usually the “O” (Obliteration) Squad takes care of that. So it was kind of suspicious that the TAK squad was directed here. Too late they realize it was a set-up.

Kendricks, the leader of the O Squad, ends up being killed by a demon that was raised from Hell itself. The demon ends up killing Zeus, Lexi’s Rottweiler friend. Lexi is filled with rage. Her werewolf backs down and the vampire and necromancer parts of her work together. Together they end up summoning ghosts and killing the demon. Then, they bring Zeus back from the dead. He’s still Zeus but he’s something much more different and terrifying now. We learn more about what he’s become when the team goes back to the PIA headquarters.

All hell breaks loose at the PIA headquarters. Part of Zeus’ powers, which I’m sure there are more, are revealed. A zombie and ghost within the PIA’s walls and shields are revealed by Lexi and the team. A demon appears. The mastermind behind all the deception and the orchestrator of the appending apocalypse is revealed. We learn part, as again I’m sure there’s more, of Laurylane’s gift to the TAK Squad, including Mark.

A Shade of Vampire (Shade of Vampire #1) by Bella Forrest

A Shade of Vampire

A Shade of Vampire is the first book in the Shade of Vampire series by author Bella Forrest. I’ve heard good things about this series and after this first book, I’m liking it so far.

———————-

Sofia Claremont has just turned seventeen years old. Her best friend, Ben, has forgotten it. When she said something to him, he apologized and she ended up walking out on him and going for a walk on the beach. She senses when someone walks up behind her and she hopes it’s Ben only it wasn’t. It was a gorgeous man who ended up putting a needle in her neck and knocking her out.

She wakes up chained to a wall in a dungeon. She is later taken, cleaned up and presented to the ruler of the vampires who has just happened to wake up a short time earlier that day/night. Derek Novak is the ruler of the vampire coven in The Shade. The Shade was his dream over 500 years ago when he first became a vampire to help protect his family and those that had protected them as well.

He takes an immediate liking to Sofia and refuses for her to be treated like the other slaves. Lucas, the one who captured Sofia, is Derek’s brother as well as Vivienne’s twin brother. Lucas hates that Derek has claimed Sofia as his as he wants her. He claims she is his because he found her and brought her to The Shade. To his brother and sister’s dismay, he decides to train Sofia and the other girls in his “harem” how to fight and defend themselves. Especially after Lucas kills Gwen.

—————————

I like this book. Right from the start I like both Sofia and Derek. Lucas and Claudia I don’t like at all. Ben and Vivienne I’m not so sure on. We’ll see how opinions change over the course of reading the next several books in the series. (I have the first seven books.) Definitely a book to read. I can see this series being as good as if not better than Twilight!
