The daughter of my oldest friend is now my responsibility. I expected a little girl in pigtails. What I got was a Lolita with an attitude that drives me insane, and a body that fuels every man’s fantasies.

She’s everywhere I turn. Tormenting me, teasing me, taunting me; wrapping herself around my every thought. Invading my life in more ways than one. Ivy Colt is my poison.

I know I shouldn’t want her, but like her namesake she’s an itch I need to scratch.

I’ve been doing some thinking lately. I am going to start doing a daily post containing top free books on Amazon as well as top paid books on Amazon. My question to you, my followers, is: would you rather it be in two posts (1 free/1 paid) or all in one post? Please tell me your thoughts and ideas on this? And what I could do to reach more people and what you think my blog needs.

Huck: The Montana Brothers (Mountain Men of Montana #1) by Alison Ryan

Huck is the first book in the Mountain Men of Montana series by author Alison Ryan. This is a good first book to the series and I can’t wait for more to come.

Belle Delford is on the run. From her old life. A mom she wanted to please after her father died. An abusive fiancee. And from being the bourbon princess to the Delford Distillery.

She lands in Whitmer, Montana. She at The Side Pocket which is a bar. She takes four shots of Maker’s Whiskey in less than thirty minutes. She’s handling it well until she gets up to leave. That’s when she ends up being carried to her room after she pukes on the bars floor by one of the owners, Huck. She had met him earlier when he bought her a shot of whiskey. She was mortified the next morning when she woke up and remembered what had happened.

Heading to The Waffle Hut she runs into Rick, the man who manages the bar and his nephew Hayes. Huck walks in shortly after Rick insists that Belle join them. She is very uncomfortable the whole time. From the time that Huck had bought her a shot, he had been really distant and kind of an asshole already. Belle decided she was going to pack up and keep going until she found another freeway rest stop town.

Only one problem. She had been cut off. Her mother turned off all her cards. She had a note waiting back at the hotel on her door. It wasn’t until they ran another card that she knew she’d been cut off. She was in deep water. No gas in her car. No money. No home. She ends up across the street at the bar and spilling her guts to Rick. He comes up with a suggestion. They’re looking for another bartender and he offers her the job.

Huck doesn’t think she’ll make it. He challenges her on the best and worst whiskey they have and she shows him up on her knowledge of it. (I kinda really loved this scene.) He decides to give her a chance seeing as he owns the bar.

Let’s just say, I love the dysfunctional part of them until he comes to his senses. When that happens, everything goes fast. Only there’s a few issues that arise before the end of the book. (I loved one scene very much and if you read this book, you should be able to figure it out.)

I think Alison Ryan has a knack for writing about hot guys and their feisty females. Her words blend seamlessly together. My favorite character has to be Huck. He’s hot, brooding and will fight anyone who messes with his staff or patrons of the bar.

The world Alison creates is believable. I could easily see this whole book unfolding in real life.

Happy release week. This book was just released on the 20th.

Beware of Scammer Authors

In the last day or two, I read a really great article on “authors” who are really scammers. The article went into detail on how these scammers are able to publish books on Kindle Unlimited and make money. These scammers are putting multiple books in one (even though it’s not advertised as a box set). The actual story advertised is usually the last book in the series.

If you know anything about Kindle Unlimited, you know the authors don’t get paid a whole lot. They are paid per page read. But recently, it’s come to light they don’t track actual pages read, they go by what the last page the book was on when it’s returned to the library. That means if the actual story is 100 pages but there are 1000 pages in the book and it’s the last book, there’s 900 pages you’re skipping over to get to the story. Assuming you finish the whole story, there’s the 1000 pages. KU shows it as having read all 1000 pages and the author is paid per page.

The pay rate per page is very low. I don’t remember the exact rate I read but it’s significantly less than a penny per page. A lot of these scammers have several pen names and multiple “stories” that they share in each book and only rearrange the order. So that means they are taking a huge chunk of the shared pot for the KU authors.

One thing I have noticed with books that have more than one and tend to be like the books the other blogger described, they start out advertising what genre it is: paranormal, romance, vampire, historical, etc. If people really want to read a book, I don’t think that you should have to advertise what genre it is in order to pull someone in to read the book. Also, if you purchase the book (like I did before I read the article) you can try going back to the books page but you get either it’s unavailable because it’s in review or else a 404 document not found error. That’s a big giveaway that something was up with it. Also, if a book is advertised as 125 pages but the file size is 3587 KB, it’s a WHOLE lot BIGGER than that 125 pages advertised!

Since reading that article the other night, I’ve been going through my Kindle book list I have and I have been checking each book that starts with the genre. 95% of them have either taken me to the 404 error page. The rest have either been in review or else are legit books with only one book in there. I still have a long way to go on my list and checking but I’ve deleted 100 or so of the books with those traits.

I urge each and everyone of you to use your own judgement on books. I know I would much rather have the legit authors who offer their books in KU to end up being paid rather than the scammers. I read and review a lot. Even though I can’t review on Amazon as my account was wiped, I still have my blog, social media channels and Goodreads that I review on. Reviews are what help encourage authors to keep writing and creating. They also help other readers. A lot of readers read reviews before purchasing a book to see what, if any, the complaints are about the book.

I firmly believe that if reviews are left about these books, telling about any editing errors, misspellings, formatting and of course, the extra books that aren’t advertised, we could make a huge dent in the scammers not being able to do it so easily in the future. Amazon is cracking down on reviewers and I think they need to be focusing on the authors that are scamming the system for huge paydays rather than reviewers who receive products in exchange for honest reviews.

Celine and the Bear (Shifting Impulse #2) by Aurora Woodlove

Celine and the Bear is the second book in the Shifting Impulse series by author Aurora Woodlove. This book features Ryan and Celine. Remember, we met Ryan briefly in the fst book as he is Adam’s twin brother.

Celine is having a birthday party at Shifting Impulse, the club, with her friends. Ryan’s bear was very close to the surface and had been all day. It was because of the flower scent he kept smelling. He knew it was his mates scent. He was at the bar that night and he caught a whiff of her from across the bar and knew instantly who the scent belonged too.

He talked to her that night but didn’t get her number. His bear was extremely close to surfacing so he got out of there. He called Janet, one of his bartenders and one of Celine’s friends, to get her number. He ends up surprising the living daylights out of Celine the next morning.

Their relationship is rocky through part of the book and then get stronger as it goes on, after a wee break.

I liked reading this book. It didn’t seem like it flowed as smoothly as the first book in the series. There were a few spelling and editing errors but nothing major. A few simple adjustments and it’d be perfect. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series which is about Janet!

Hell Spawn (Shifter Squad #9) by J.C. Diem

Hell Spawn

Hell Spawn is the ninth and final book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem. This book is what all the others have been leading up too. This book is definitely more somber than the others but it needed to be.

Lexi, Reece, Kala, Flynn and the rest of the people they know, came into contact with, rescued and even all of humanity need to come together in order for their world to be saved. Kurt Jorgen makes it impossible for the humans to not know about the supernatural community after he starts his attacks. He wipes out several towns. Before long he’s taken out half a million people.

Lexi, Reece and the rest of their team try to stop Kurt and his minions. Lexi is actually able to surprise Kurt and wring his neck, effectively killing him. Only thing is, he doesn’t stay dead. None of them had a way of knowing that he was immortal just as she and her team were. Lexi retreats with the Oracles help and they come up with another plan. They call on ALL the resources they’ve come across. Cole, Bruce, Aiden, Leanne, the Oracle, and yes, even Nina’s pack. Shifters have a tendency to fight when they’re around rival packs.

Lexi has to take over their minds as the supreme alpha shifter and instill an order not to attack each other. Since she and Reece are the supreme alpha shifter couple, no one can resist them. Lexi leaves Reece, Flynn and Kala out of her orders. On one of their missions, her father, Philip Levine, is grabbed by the griffin golem and taken into the air. She does the only thing she can think of to save him. She makes him into an immortal just like Zeus is. He doesn’t seem to like it at first but gets used to it.

I didn’t think the author could outdo themselves compared to previous books. Man was I wrong. I absolutely loved this book. I’m sad it’s the end of the series…especially with how it ended. Hopefully the new series coming out in May is a spin off of this series and we get to read more, maybe from a different Champions POV, possibly?

This book had me crying at parts. There really were no happy moments in this book unless you count Kala killing a certain member they’d all wanted to kill a long time, and I’m not talking about Kurt Jorgen! 😀 This book will have you glued to the pages from beginning to end, not wanting to do anything else until you finish it. I couldn’t believe some of the things that were in here but it made an awesome read. Highly recommend this series!

Tackled: A Sports Romance by Sabrina Paige

Tackled is a football themed sports romance by author Sabrina Paige. I’m going to be hyper-critical of this book because it is so similar to another book I have read, #Nerd.

Cassie is the hot-librarian/nerd that is hired to tutor football star Colton King. Colton King is a cocky, arrogant SOB who thinks every female wants him. Cassie is a twenty-three year old virgin. They end up bantering back and forth and having a hot/cold relationship before they finally give in and let the cards fall where they may.

Here come the comparisons/hyper-criticalisms:

  1. Rimmel (#Nerd) and Cassie (Tackled) are both hot nerds that play down their looks, not caring what someone else thinks.
  2. Romeo (#Nerd) and Colton (Tackled) are both football stars that need help in the academic world.
  3. They are both assigned to the nerds and think they can bang them right away.
  4. Both girls refuse to give in to the boys right away.
  5. Both boys are cocky and arrogant.
  6. The roommates/best friends of the girls push them towards the said cocky, arrogant football stars.
  7. Roommates/best friends end up with said football stars friends/teammates.
  8. There is the one player that wants to ruin everything.
  9. The football stars mom’s meddle in their business. (One trying to break them apart and another pushing them together.)
  10. Girls are assaulted by said players who want to ruin everything.

There are a few more similarities but I think you get the jest. With this book being a lot like Cambria Hebert’s #Nerd (and parts from other books as well!), I just couldn’t get real excited about this book once I started reading it.

Please read both books for yourself before deciding for yourself.

3/5 stars
