#SupervillainsFallInLove

Everyone wants justice.

That’s what Assistant DA, Lulu Lightly, tells me. “Cathedral City needs you to set things right,” she says. “To rid this place of corruption, once and for all.”

I’d like to rid Lulu Lightly of her clothes. And maybe her moral superiority. But mostly her clothes.

“I want you to fight the good fight with me,” she says.

Hell, yeah. I’m always up for a fight.

“We should stand up and be the voice of the people,” she says.

Sure, I hear voices. Sometimes I even listen to them.

“Figure out what’s good for the City and put it first,” she says.

Oh, honey… what’s good for the City is bad for the people. Trust me, I know. I’m Case Reider—insane Alpha, nefarious inventor, and I understand this town better than anyone.

Cathedral City needs me all right. Just not the way you think.

I’m not the justice you’re looking for, Lulu Lightly.

I’m still the same villain you left behind.

Only now… there’s something very, very wrong with me.

EXCERPT:

“What?” I ask. “What is it, Randy? Tell me what’s going on.”

He takes one last photo out of the folder and pushes it towards me. “You’re here because of him.”

I almost stop breathing.

Case Reider.

The one boy I desperately didn’t want to leave behind when my father moved us out to Wolf Valley seven years ago.

“Yes,” I whisper. “I know him.”

“I know you know him,” Randy says softly. He places a hand on mine just as Lisa appears with another cup of coffee.

I take it from her, muttering some thanks, and then take a long, long sip before coming up for air and letting it out in a sigh.

“He was your escort for the Debutante Ball.”

“How do you know that?” I ask.

“I was there that night.” He smiles sheepishly. “Someone else’s date, obviously. I saw you with him.”

“I haven’t seen him in forever.”

Randy waves a hand in the air. “Doesn’t matter. We’re not after him.”

I feel so relieved.

“Not yet.”

My relief disappears.

“We know for a fact that Lincoln Wade is a black-hat hacker, Lulu. And Detective Molly Masters has been dating him since she came to town. But the real problem is… Lincoln Wade and Case Reider have been best friends since childhood. Do you remember those two boys who went missing twenty years ago, without a trace, then reappeared several years later with no explanation?”

“Oh, Jesus.”

“Yup,” Randy says. “Those two boys were Case and Lincoln. We think Brooks was involved somehow, but we’re not sure where they intersect. They are close now, at any rate. Lulu,” Randy says, leaning across his desk to take both my hands in his. “We need Case Reider to get to Lincoln Wade and Molly Masters, and we need you to get him for us.”

EXCERPT:

Before she finished her thought he grabbed her hands. Energy excited her molecules and zipped through her body. She recognized the feeling and wasn’t shocked when he let go of her hands and they were behind the stadium in the field where she first learned Veronica was a witch.

“It’s more private here. We don’t need people listening to us. And your friend is on her way,” he said with grin.

“What?” she said before she remembered witches were telepathic. “Never mind,” she followed up with.

“I’m Cody.”

“Alison.”

Within a few minutes Lacey joined them, jumping right into it and getting to the point. “I’m so happy you found us. We could use you on our side.”

He smiled. “My parents are powerful witches. As their offspring, I have a collection of all their powers; telekinesis, telepathy, lighting balls and bolts, teleportation, and pretty much anything. Anyone in a witch bloodline has magic, but it has to be practiced.”

Lacey stomped her foot and folded her arms over her chest. “You’ve known about us. You see our glow, so why didn’t you come to us sooner?”

He chuckled. “I’m a witch. I know this is new to you, but we don’t get involved unless you need us. We created Slayers. One person, every other generation in a witch of the light bloodline, that the spelled amulets call to and who can use the magic inside the amulet.”

Alison rolled the idea around in her head. That wasn’t news, but she grasped again at the light witch bloodline thing. A thought clung to her brain and manifested. They didn’t derive all their power from the amulets. They each had magic inside them that accentuated the magic in the amulet.

Lacey twisted her face. “You can help us?

“I can help you draw on your own magic that makes the magic in the amulets stronger. Don’t get me wrong, you won’t be able to share each other’s magic unless you are connected by touch but you can strengthen the spelled magic in the amulets and do most anything with it,” he paused.

“I don’t know if you’ve felt it, but there’s disturbance in our energy field. Something big is happening, coming our way. We need to be prepared and ready and you need to tap into powers that other Slayers naturally tap into overtime. You don’t have that time,” he said, his face and voice grave.

Songs of Insurrection

(Daughter of the Dragon Throne #1)
Publication date: January 6th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy

Princess Kaiya’s voice could charm a dragon.

Had she lived when the power of music could still summon typhoons and rout armies, perhaps Cathay’s imperial court would see her as more than a singing fool. With alliances to build and ambitious lords to placate, they care more about her marriage prospects than her voice.

Only the handsome Prince Hardeep, a foreign martial mystic, recognizes her potential. Convinced Kaiya will rediscover the legendary but perilous art of invoking magic through music, he suggests her voice, not her marriage, might better serve the realm.

When members of the emperor’s elite spy clan– Kaiya’s childhood friend Tian and his half-elf sidekick (or maybe he’s her sidekick?)– discover mere discontent boiling over into full-scale rebellion, Kaiya must choose. Obediently wedding the depraved ringleader means giving up her music. Confronting him with the growing power of her voice could kill her.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

CHAPTER 1

Not-So-Chance Meetings

If marriage were a woman’s grave, as the proverb claimed, sixteen-year-old Princess Kaiya suspected the emperor was arranging her funeral. Entourage in tow, she shuffled through the castle halls toward the garden where General Lu waited. Given his notorious dislike of the arts, the self-proclaimed Guardian Dragon of Hua had undoubtedly envisioned a different kind of audition when he requested to hear her sing.

After all, she was dressed like a potential bride.

She buried a snort. The Guardian Dragon—such a pretentious nickname. The only real dragon, Avarax, who lorded over some faraway land, might make for a more appealing audience. A quick trip down his gullet would spare her a slow death in a marriage with neither love nor music.

And it wouldn’t matter what she wore.

The gaudy dress compensated for her numerous physical imperfections, but stifled the only thing that made her special. How was she supposed to sing with the inner robe and gold sash squeezing her chest, in a futile attempt to misrepresent her woefully underdeveloped curves? The tight fold of the skirts concealed her lanky legs, but forced a deliberate pace. At least the short stride delayed the inevitable, while preventing her unsightly feet from tripping on the hanging sleeves of the vermilion outer gown.

At her side, Crown Princess Xiulan glided across the chirping floorboards. Kaiya suppressed a sigh. If only she could move with the nonchalant grace of her sister-in-law, or even the six handmaidens trailing them. She dug her nails into clammy palms. Through this choreographed farce, appearances had to be maintained, lest she embarrass her father, the Tianzi.

Chin up, back straight. A racing heart threatened to ruin her already meager semblance of imperial grace. Eyes forward. Servants knelt on either side of the looming double doors, ready to slide them open. She forced a smile, with her best approximation of feminine charm. If only she’d lived before Dragon Songs had faded into legend, she could’ve sent the realm’s victorious hero fleeing with the song he supposedly wanted to hear.

An aging palace official stepped into her line of sight.

Singular focus on the doors broken, she blinked. Her fluttering pulse lurched to a stop as she blew out a breath.

His blue robes ruffled as he tottered forward with averted eyes and a bobbing head. He creaked down into a bow. “Emergency, Dian-xia,” he said, using the formal address for her rank. “The Tianzi commands you to greet a foreign delegation in the Hall of Bountiful Harvests.”

Celine and the Bear (Shifting Impulse #2) by Aurora Woodlove

Celine

Celine and the Bear is the second book in the Shifting Impulse series by author Aurora Woodlove. This book features Ryan and Celine. Remember, we met Ryan briefly in the fst book as he is Adam’s twin brother.

Celine is having a birthday party at Shifting Impulse, the club, with her friends. Ryan’s bear was very close to the surface and had been all day. It was because of the flower scent he kept smelling. He knew it was his mates scent. He was at the bar that night and he caught a whiff of her from across the bar and knew instantly who the scent belonged too.

He talked to her that night but didn’t get her number. His bear was extremely close to surfacing so he got out of there. He called Janet, one of his bartenders and one of Celine’s friends, to get her number. He ends up surprising the living daylights out of Celine the next morning.

Their relationship is rocky through part of the book and then get stronger as it goes on, after a wee break.

————————————-

I liked reading this book. It didn’t seem like it flowed as smoothly as the first book in the series. There were a few spelling and editing errors but nothing major. A few simple adjustments and it’d be perfect. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series which is about Janet!

Hell Spawn (Shifter Squad #9) by J.C. Diem

Hell Spawn

Hell Spawn is the ninth and final book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem. This book is what all the others have been leading up too. This book is definitely more somber than the others but it needed to be.

Lexi, Reece, Kala, Flynn and the rest of the people they know, came into contact with, rescued and even all of humanity need to come together in order for their world to be saved. Kurt Jorgen makes it impossible for the humans to not know about the supernatural community after he starts his attacks. He wipes out several towns. Before long he’s taken out half a million people.

Lexi, Reece and the rest of their team try to stop Kurt and his minions. Lexi is actually able to surprise Kurt and wring his neck, effectively killing him. Only thing is, he doesn’t stay dead. None of them had a way of knowing that he was immortal just as she and her team were. Lexi retreats with the Oracles help and they come up with another plan. They call on ALL the resources they’ve come across. Cole, Bruce, Aiden, Leanne, the Oracle, and yes, even Nina’s pack. Shifters have a tendency to fight when they’re around rival packs.

Lexi has to take over their minds as the supreme alpha shifter and instill an order not to attack each other. Since she and Reece are the supreme alpha shifter couple, no one can resist them. Lexi leaves Reece, Flynn and Kala out of her orders. On one of their missions, her father, Philip Levine, is grabbed by the griffin golem and taken into the air. She does the only thing she can think of to save him. She makes him into an immortal just like Zeus is. He doesn’t seem to like it at first but gets used to it.

———————————————-

I didn’t think the author could outdo themselves compared to previous books. Man was I wrong. I absolutely loved this book. I’m sad it’s the end of the series…especially with how it ended. Hopefully the new series coming out in May is a spin off of this series and we get to read more, maybe from a different Champions POV, possibly?

This book had me crying at parts. There really were no happy moments in this book unless you count Kala killing a certain member they’d all wanted to kill a long time, and I’m not talking about Kurt Jorgen! 😀 This book will have you glued to the pages from beginning to end, not wanting to do anything else until you finish it. I couldn’t believe some of the things that were in here but it made an awesome read. Highly recommend this series!

Anna and the Bear (Shifting Impulse #1) by Aurora Woodlove

Anna and the Bear

Anna and the Bear is the first book in the Shifting Impulse series by author Aurora Woodlove. This is her first book written as well. I was excited to read this since Aurora is a friend of one of my favorite authors and friends. I’m going to give my honest opinion here so please don’t kill me.

I think the book was lacking and rushed. It’s missing back-story of both characters and I felt we really needed backstory. Anna is definitely a damaged character but we don’t know why she is the way she is. She wants Adam and then pushes him away and then wants him and then pushes him away. Even though Adam doesn’t take no for an answer, he gives her a taste of her own medicine after they sleep together one night and she wants him to leave.

Adam wants nothing more than to take her back to his place and mate with her, making her his. Adam hides things from Anna but she forgives him. Like when she goes out to meet a client and ends up meeting Ryan, Adam’s twin brother. The way Ryan and Adam acted, I kinda thought it was going to turn out differently when it came to this part.

It’s pretty much sex from the beginning and Anna resisting Adam. The story is rushed which I felt could have had so much potential had it not been so short at only 72 pages. Overall, it’s an okay book. I would be interested in reading the second book in the series in the future and seeing how her writing progresses.

Alpha Breed: Werewolf Bikers by Amanda Close

Alpha Breed

2/5 🌟

Author Amanda Close is a new to me author. I came across this book being advertised as free in one of the many Facebook Book groups that I’m in. The title grabbed my attention and the cover drew me in so I purchased this book.

Brienne is a nineteen year old college student. She has a boyfriend back home in Macon, Georgia but decides she isn’t going to worry about him while at school. During summer break, she kept having these vivid dreams and would wake up horny as heck and would jump her boyfriends bones. After a month or so he got used to it. Then she went off to school and her dreams have settled down.

She’s at a frat party one night with her friends when a group of bikers pull up on their motorcycles. Brienne and two of her friends are searched out and go with them. They ride on the motorcycles for over an hour before pulling into a camping spot. Brienne and her friends are among two different motorcycle groups.

Roland and Arn fight each other until one can’t fight anymore for the right to claim Brienne. Roland wins that first fight but there are more to come down the road.

—————————————

This story is only 47 pages long so it’s a rather short read. I felt like it was too rushed and the author couldn’t wait to get this story over with. I feel there was so much potential to this story but the author didn’t want to have any of the potential touched on. I didn’t really feel the characters were realistic.

Normal price for this book is $2.99 for Prime members and free with Kindle Unlimited. Honestly, had I paid $2.99 for this book, I would have returned it and gotten my money back. I am glad I got it while it was free as I wasn’t out any money, only some time.

Please note I trust you to make your own decisions about this book. The opinions specified in this review are mine and mine alone. If you’ve read this book, please feel free to comment your likes/dislikes.

Assassin’s Touch (Iron Portal #1) by Laurie London

Assassin's Touch

Assassin’s Touch is the first book in the Iron Portal series by author Laurie London. It seems like a lot of books I’ve gotten lately, have only been filled with multiple stories with no claim to be more than what was advertised. So I was sure this book was going to be like that. It’s not. This entire book is this story with no others in it!

Laurie London is a new to me author. I really liked this book. The characters are well-built and not just flat.

Neyla is a Talent soldier on the Pacifican side of the portal. There are two sides: the Pacifican and the Cascadian although the Cascadian is referred to as the Barrowlands or Barbarians. (Really, it should be the other way around.) Since Neyla is a protection talent, she is automatically moved up the ranks in the Army and skips most of the grueling tests the others have to go through so they hate her immediately.

Her talent was discovered a year ago when she was riding on a train and bombs blew it off the rails. Everyone in her car lived and there was no explanation other than a latent protection talent was in there. Everyone was tested and it came back that Neyla was the Talent! This mission was to find a portal and stop any of the enemy who came through. Only that’s not quite how it worked out.

Smythe, another soldier, really hates Neyla and ends up pushing her over the cliff where she falls and lands on a ledge, unconscious. Unknown to her or the other soldiers, the portal is very close to that ledge and Rickert is hiding on the ledge in the shadows. He in instantly pissed that a soldier would do that to one of their own but to a woman no less. When Smythe gets down to the ledge, he doesn’t make it much longer as Rickert kills him and sends him over the ledge and down to the rocks below.

Rickert ends up taking Neyla through the portal. Instead of handing her over to Louis at the jail, he takes her to the castle and gives her his old room and he takes the one next to it. Things are tense between them before things come to light at the market one day. Rickert is a talent too and more than just a fire talent like they had always thought. But it takes Neyla to bring his other power out.

———————————–

This was a good book to read. It held by attention the entire time and I was longing for more! This story is different from other books I’ve read based on it’s type and the way it flows. There are “normal” people like us, ones perceived as “barbarians”, fata (magic) talents and so many more things that set this book apart from any others. I consider it a short book at only 175 pages but it’s a DAMN good 175 pages! I honestly have no complaints other than the length but hey, we all know I like really long books. 😀

Web Master (Shifter Squad #8) by J.C. Diem

Web Master

Web Master is the eighth book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem.  The books get better and better as they go! I was honestly stunned when I read who the main villain has been this whole time. And how long the treachery has been going on. I didn’t see it coming but once you learn who it is and realize stuff said and done in the last several books, it makes sense although it doesn’t add up on it’s own until you realize it! I laughed and cried while reading this book and was totally creeped out since there were spiders involved in this book. While reading it, I seriously felt like I had spiders crawling all over me.

I can’t wait to see where the ninth and final book of the series takes us when it’s released in March. I hope Lexi is able to succeed with her mission but right now, I’m not so sure that she’s going to be able to succeed. I’ll just have to wait and read the last book when it comes out later this year!!

———————

This book is full of treachery. The Track and Kill Squad is summoned to PIA Headquarters. This is unusual since only those with level eight clearance is allowed there. Everyone but Mark are all level fives. They make it to headquarters and are given a bunch of information on EERI buildings. EERI needs to be eliminated and who better to do it than the TAK squad. But usually the “O” (Obliteration) Squad takes care of that. So it was kind of suspicious that the TAK squad was directed here. Too late they realize it was a set-up.

Kendricks, the leader of the O Squad, ends up being killed by a demon that was raised from Hell itself. The demon ends up killing Zeus, Lexi’s Rottweiler friend. Lexi is filled with rage. Her werewolf backs down and the vampire and necromancer parts of her work together. Together they end up summoning ghosts and killing the demon. Then, they bring Zeus back from the dead. He’s still Zeus but he’s something much more different and terrifying now. We learn more about what he’s become when the team goes back to the PIA headquarters.

All hell breaks loose at the PIA headquarters. Part of Zeus’ powers, which I’m sure there are more, are revealed. A zombie and ghost within the PIA’s walls and shields are revealed by Lexi and the team. A demon appears. The mastermind behind all the deception and the orchestrator of the appending apocalypse is revealed. We learn part, as again I’m sure there’s more, of Laurylane’s gift to the TAK Squad, including Mark.
