Title: Carnival of Darkness (FaeTAL #1)

Author: Becca Moree

Price: Free on Kindle $5.99 Paperback

Release Date: July 14, 2016

Description: Brett sold his soul to the devil. Only hell isn’t a fiery pit in the bowels of the earth. Hell is the Carnival of Darkness where the freak shows are real, the screams never end, and the girl of his dreams has become a part of his nightmare.

Charlee has been kidnapped by the freaks that run The Carnival of Darkness. If that weren’t bad enough, she’s harboring a secret that will put her life in even more danger should her captors find out. Now, she has a decision to make – keep her head down and wait on someone to save her, or fight to escape and get back to the ones she left behind.

Brett wants to trust Charlee with the reason he is working at the carnival, but she still has reservations about his intentions. Charlee doesn’t trust anyone, but Brett may be her only hope.

WARNING: This circus and the carnies within are FREAKS with extremely dirty mouths and minds that some may find offensive. COD is filled with dark, demented, horrific, depraved and disturbing things. If you aren’t into paranormal creatures as well as a bit of blood, guts and taboo things this book is not for you! (Trigger Warning)

Oh man. This book. It is DARK and demented. It is definitely NOT for the faint hearted or those that have trigger warnings such as abuse, rape and the like. I think Charlee is my favorite character outside Brett so far. She’s a strong woman who will do anything to protect her daughter’s life and secret while protecting her own secret as well.

The guys at the C.o.D are definitely freaks, minus Brett. I honestly think he’s going to have psychological damage going into the next book after everything he’s been through that we’ve read about in the book plus stuff we don’t know about!

I would highly recommend this book to those that like dark reads. My only issue with the book is that it’s so short at only 106 pages! 4*’s solid!

Mobster’s Girl (Mobster’s #1) by Amy Rachiele

Mobster's Girl (Mobster's Series Book 1) by [Rachiele, Amy]

Title: Mobster’s Girl (Mobster’s #1)

Author: Amy Rachiele

Release Date: June 13, 2012

Price: Free on Kindle $9.99 Paperback $1.99 Audible

Description: Gripping my chest is the only way to hold myself together or what’s left of me will fall out. The past week has enlightened me on one thing-I don’t care.
Megan, Mobster’s Girl

I didn’t even hesitate. I took two strides and blasted him in the face with my fist. He was ready for it this time-unlike in church. He tried to hit me back but I ducked and smashed him again.
Antonio, Mobster’s Girl

You can’t help what family you’re born into or what lies they keep from you. You can’t help it if they mold and shape you just the way they wanted. Are monsters born or made?

Antonio and Megan have a timeless issue. They were told to stay away from each other. They try, they really do. But they are drawn to each other.

Antonio is eighteen and the up and coming mob boss of Palmetto, New Jersey. Megan is a girl uprooted from the grassy plains of Ireland at the age of five. Now she’s seventeen and faced with horrors she never thought existed.

Megan is seventeen and her best friend is Troy and is in her last year of high school while Troy is starting college. Antonio is eighteen and in his last year of high school as well. Antonio has liked Megan for years, since they were kids. His father warned him off of being friends with her or trying to date her.

This book is decent. I liked the story line but thought there could have been more to the story. This book is 230 pages long but I thought some more background or more buildup would have been good for it.

The characters are typical characters for the world the author has created. I’m not sure how I feel about a couple characters but I do like Megan and Antonio.

Overall, 3.5*’s for this book.

Description: Zoey

Turning thirty is overrated. Who said you had to be married with a fabulous career and three kids? I had a great life. Single, freedom to do whatever I please, and best of all, stay home on a Friday night in my sweats, eating pizza while listening to the best of the ’80s.

I’m fine.

Drew

When a woman says she’s fine, she’s not fine. Zoey had it all. Stunning looks, ambition, the whole package. Then he fucked her up. He broke her.

And now I’m left picking up the pieces…again.

Zoey Richards, strong-willed and driven, settled on the geeky struggling med student to share her apartment with, not the perfect-in-every-way stud who would just distract her and undoubtedly break her heart.

When her ex comes back into the picture, Zoey seeks revenge and enlists her roommate’s help. All Zoey and Drew need to do is pretend to be a couple for one night. But one night can change everything. Refusing to break their “roomie code,” and in an effort to deny their feelings for each other, a war erupts between Zoey and Drew.

She lives in the past; he, for the future. If opposites attract, will these two gamble their friendship for a chance at love?

————————————–

I really liked this book. Zoey is a typical female in her late twenties. She’s looking for a roommate and interviews several men before deciding on Andrew. After a while he becomes more health conscious and starts hitting the gym. With his new self, he decides he wants to be called Drew instead of Andrew. He’s a man-whore while Zoey hasn’t had anything serious since her relationship with Jess ended.

Things get complicated during the course of the story. And I mean complicated to the point I think it’s almost over at a few parts and it keeps going to prove me wrong. It’s a nice love story with some obstacles worked in. Not too many and not too few. I laughed a few times during this book at a few parts.

Author Kat Masen has a way with words. They were easy to read and flowed nicely across the page. I didn’t notice any spelling or grammatical errors. A solid 4/5 *’s on this one.

Curing Doctor Vincent (The Good Doctor Trilogy #1) by Renea Mason

curing-doctor-vincent

Amazon Description: Elaine Watkins, Public Relations Advisor, is surprised when she receives a summons from the very attractive and enigmatic Dr. Xavier Vincent. She worships the talented physician and company icon responsible for developing the cure that saved her sister’s life and isn’t immune to his charm. Even though puzzled by his request, she is excited and eager to get started on his latest project.

But Dr. Vincent has other ideas. Instead of discussing cures, drugs and marketing strategies, he asks Elaine to join him in Paris to indulge his unique sexual appetites.

Torn between gratitude for saving her sister, her attraction for the powerful man and compromising her pre-conceived notions of sexuality, she must decide if it’s easier to feed his desires or walk away. Until she devises a plan of her own.

“Make no mistake, Elaine, I am a king. Kings command and conquer. They are brutal and uncompromising. You don’t want a king. Face it, you came here expecting a saint.” – Dr. Xavier

Curing Doctor Vincent is the first book in the Good Doctor Trilogy by author Renea Mason. It’s close to the anniversary of the day that her serial killer father is supposed to reveal where another of his victims is located. Elaine is ambushed at a company dinner and she ends up walking away. Dr Xavier Vincent follows her to make sure she’s alright.

Little does she realize that Dr. Vincent wants to have her in a different way. He ends up purchasing her a plane ticket to Paris which goes through her company as a “business” trip. Only, it’s anything but business. He proposes a deal to her and then leaves her to go to sleep. She is ambushed the next night with meeting two other people who are part of the deal.

What is the deal that Xavier has? Can she go through with it? Can she just walk away?

Honestly, I think the relationship between Elaine and Xavier is all kinds of screwed up for 99% of the book.  I understand why it is the way it is but it kinda makes you wonder if the author has had some sort of experience with it or if she just has a really good imagination! I didn’t really have a favorite character from this book as none of them really spoke to me and jumped from the pages. Sure they each had personality and everything but none really captured my attention.

I was disappointed when the book ended at the 68% mark. What fills the other 32% you question? Pages thanking the reader, information about the author, information about other books and then the first two chapters of two different books. Honestly, I could have done without the two books and their chapters included and had the story been longer.

Overall, 3/5 stars for this book.

Testing Zero (Remnants of Zone Four Chronicles #1) by N. G. Simsion

testing-zero

Amazon Description: Fans of series like The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, and Divergent will love N.G. Simsion.

Zero prefers to keep his life simple. Although he is easily one of the largest and cleverest boys in his year, he runs from any sign of confrontation. His best friend—his only friend—is nothing like him. Obsessed with the world outside of the city walls, Lefty is always pushing the boundaries set by society’s Elite. It’s only a matter of time before they have gone too far and they’re forced to face the horrors of the “old world” on their own. Can they survive and learn to coexist with the dangerous Remnants of the old world? Are the Remnants of the old world even the worst of their problems, or do the Elite of their own society pose an even greater threat?

——————————————————————-

Testing Zero is the first book in the Remnants of Zone Four Chronicles by author N. G. Simsion. This is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic series. Only this doesn’t deal with zombies per se.

Zero and Lefty are best friends. Kids are normally called by a letter and number, such as R-111. When you earn a nickname, that’s what you are called. Lefty got his nickname when an alligator outside the fence ended up taking off 2.5 fingers on his right hand and he had to adapt to doing everything with his left hand. Zero got his nickname because he gets into zero conflict and fighting with others and can blend into the background so much that most people don’t know he’s there.

Flea is a bully. He’s the second smallest in their class with Lefty being the smallest. Flea never takes battles on by himself, always having several of his friends with him. Lefty decides that he wants to get even with Flea which he gets even by putting a baby alligator in Flea’s desk. It bites his foot when he opens his desk and it springs out and lands on the floor.

Lefty and Zero are both sent to put it back outside the fence and to close it up and to then report to the principals office. Their punishment is to miss the graduation party that will be happening and to help babysit the new children being brought in. The next day they head off to their testing to decide where they will be living and working. Lefty and Flea end up fighting during the written test which causes Zero to jump in and try to break it up.

All three of them are taken outside the fence and into an area where it isn’t safe. Remnants are infected people. They contracted a virus that essentially kills their brains and turns them into angry, murderous people. They fight off several Remnants before a truck stops on the road and takes the three of them back to the testing area since the Elite that brought them out didn’t have the authority. They are the first three drafted in the draft which shocks them as they didn’t do well on the physical portion of the test and were automatically given zeros on the written portion of the tests.

Zero gets to thinking and has some good questions that leave this book in a cliff hanger.

I thought this book was a good take on a post-apocalyptic and dystopian book. I like the take that the author had on the Remnants and not making them into complete mindless zombies. This book is only 115 pages. I wish it would have been longer as it had so much more potential. Overall an ok read.

Assassin’s Touch (Iron Portal #1) by Laurie London

Assassin's Touch

Assassin’s Touch is the first book in the Iron Portal series by author Laurie London. It seems like a lot of books I’ve gotten lately, have only been filled with multiple stories with no claim to be more than what was advertised. So I was sure this book was going to be like that. It’s not. This entire book is this story with no others in it!

Laurie London is a new to me author. I really liked this book. The characters are well-built and not just flat.

Neyla is a Talent soldier on the Pacifican side of the portal. There are two sides: the Pacifican and the Cascadian although the Cascadian is referred to as the Barrowlands or Barbarians. (Really, it should be the other way around.) Since Neyla is a protection talent, she is automatically moved up the ranks in the Army and skips most of the grueling tests the others have to go through so they hate her immediately.

Her talent was discovered a year ago when she was riding on a train and bombs blew it off the rails. Everyone in her car lived and there was no explanation other than a latent protection talent was in there. Everyone was tested and it came back that Neyla was the Talent! This mission was to find a portal and stop any of the enemy who came through. Only that’s not quite how it worked out.

Smythe, another soldier, really hates Neyla and ends up pushing her over the cliff where she falls and lands on a ledge, unconscious. Unknown to her or the other soldiers, the portal is very close to that ledge and Rickert is hiding on the ledge in the shadows. He in instantly pissed that a soldier would do that to one of their own but to a woman no less. When Smythe gets down to the ledge, he doesn’t make it much longer as Rickert kills him and sends him over the ledge and down to the rocks below.

Rickert ends up taking Neyla through the portal. Instead of handing her over to Louis at the jail, he takes her to the castle and gives her his old room and he takes the one next to it. Things are tense between them before things come to light at the market one day. Rickert is a talent too and more than just a fire talent like they had always thought. But it takes Neyla to bring his other power out.

———————————–

This was a good book to read. It held by attention the entire time and I was longing for more! This story is different from other books I’ve read based on it’s type and the way it flows. There are “normal” people like us, ones perceived as “barbarians”, fata (magic) talents and so many more things that set this book apart from any others. I consider it a short book at only 175 pages but it’s a DAMN good 175 pages! I honestly have no complaints other than the length but hey, we all know I like really long books. 😀

Twist Me (Twist Me #1) by Anna Zaires

Twist Me

Nora is almost eighteen years old. She goes out with a friend clubbing and gets in using a fake ID. There, she comes in contact with a guy named Julian. The spark between them and the heaviness freaks her out and she makes Leah leave right then and there. Not wanting to be there anymore she fakes a headache.

A couple weeks later, she graduates. While walking across the stage, she sees him in the crowd. Later, after the ceremony is finished, the girls go to a party at Jake’s house. Nora has a HUGE crush on Jake. She ends up talking to him a while and he knows her name. He ends up asking her out and she agrees.

After dinner and a movie, they are walking through the park. When Jake gives her a kiss, all hell breaks loose. Jake ends up being knocked out. Nora only sees a large figure standing over him before she feels a prick in her neck and is unconscious. When she wakes up, she’s naked in a bed and has no idea where she is. Eventually, Julian returns and has his way with her. He enjoys breaking her only to build her back up again. Beth, his friend and caretaker, lives in the house as well.

Nora has a bright idea of trying to knock Beth out and escaping. Only to find out that they’re on an island and her attempt was futile. She spends the night out in the wilderness. Going back to the house, she decides to try and force Beth to help her. Sneaking into Beth’s room, she gets a rude awakening when Julian is back from his business trip a few days early. And boy is he PISSED!!

————————–

I’m no stranger to Anna Zaires works. I’ve read her Krinar Chronicles series. This book, I don’t know why, but I somehow was thinking it was vampires. Imagine my surprise when it’s just humans and arms dealers! Lol. Nora is a character I liked. Beth, I liked her too and was sad at her murder. Julian, I’m not so sure about. Definitely a book to read. If you’re a prude and don’t like sex scenes, then definitely don’t read this book.

I’ve read the Fifty Shades series and was on the fence with it. In this book, there is no agreement drawn up between them and a test period. This one is full on rape. Nora ends up falling for Julian in the end but is almost always reluctant to do anything with him, even if her body wants it. I’m just not complete sure on how I feel about this book yet.

Excellence by Raj Davis

Excellence

Todd, Ebony and Lee are all teenagers or pre-teen. Their mother died two years before, forcing their father back into their lives. They deal with abuse each and every day not only from school mates but from their father as well. The other kids pick on them all the time. One kid starts a rumor that Todd is doing his sisters. Their father makes them take baths when he gets home and then they are naked the rest of the night.

Todd finally has enough of this and he snaps. He wails on the kid that had started the rumor while Ebony and Lee take on the female bully and her friend. This earns them respect and kids leave them alone from that point on. When their father is called to the school since the fights happened there, they learn of Ebony being a genius.

Flash forward into the future. Todd is working for a drug dealer. The previous week, a rival gang had shot Teflon (the leaders son). Teflon makes it Todds job to find Scorpion and kill him. Teflon learns where Scorpion is and passes the information on Todd. Todd takes a chunk of his money and gives to Lee to pay the bills that their father was ignoring. He then visits Ebony for a while before embarking on his mission.

This book can hit home on so many levels with so many people. Children losing their parents, bullying, being abused, drug deals, fighting. Each of these elements can be present in each and every one of our lives at some point and time. I liked reading this book because it’s real on different levels. The characters could be everyday people like you and I. The world the author creates could pass for any normal town/city with a ghetto. Definitely an eye opener while reading this book.

The Magical Zoo #1 by Dan Jackson

The Magical Zoo

This book is so cute. I came across it and thought my daughter would love it. I read through it first because even though it’s a children’s book, you can never be too careful.

The pictures are done very well. The writing is easy to where children can understand and read on their own. I was reading this book to my daughter. I’m not sure if she had more fun with me reading to her or looking at the pictures and pointing things out.

There are different animals represented in the book. I can’t wait to see how each animal plays into the story and what is taught about each animal and how they get them back to the Magical Zoo.

———————–

This is a cute book. Lots of colors in the pictures. Easy words for children to read. When it says “endless imagination” it truly means endless imagination. My daughter was coming up with a ton of different scenarios as to what each of the animals could be doing or where they would go. She was also coming up with outlandish things that each animal would wear and eat to hide itself so it didn’t have to go back. She’s 5 and very smart. She said that since they left the book then they didn’t want to be there anymore so they would hide themselves to keep from going back. A very cute and thought provoking book for children.

Seven Psychics (Shifter Squad #1) by J.C. Diem

Seven Psychics

This book was awesome! Alexis, or Lexi as she likes to be called, is a great sniper. Her father is the best sniper that the Army has and he has trained her well. She is 17 years old, only a few months shy of being 18. Her father, Phillip, is on a mission somewhere so she’s home alone by herself. Each day she goes to the Army base and uses the indoor and outdoor range. On this particular fateful day that will ultimately change her life, she is at the range showing off, which she knows her father would disapprove of it he was there.

After going inside the indoor range after retrieving her target, she is approached by a fan and then by a man wearing a suit whom she pegs as a fed since he’s the only one dumb enough to be wearing a jacket in the Texas heat. Not knowing who he is, she is cautious and refuses to leave the indoor range with him. He makes a call and talks to her father before he hands the phone over to her. They talk a minute or two and then she leaves with him since her father knows him and trusts him.

He lets her drive the SUV to her house. She packs a bag for a while and they go to the base and board a private jet. They eventually make it back to the private base where she’ll be staying with Mark and the three others in his squad. Lexi is about to get thrown into a world in which she didn’t know existed, the paranormal. There was an institution break the week before. Seven people with psychic abilities broke out and were on the run but weren’t leaving Denver since that’s where they lived prior to being locked up.

Each of them is named for a deadly sin since they each make their victims out one of the sins. They are each slowly and systematically taken out but not without some casualties along the way. What all happens along the road to taking out these menaces to society? Who all gets caught in the crosshairs? And how does this temporary arrangement turn into a full-time one? Who is going to survive the wrath of Lexi’s father when he gets back home and who will meet their end?

————————-

This book was awesome. I bought it yesterday and was so in love with the description and idea of this book that I started reading it immediately.  I finished it earlier today and I seriously can’t wait until I have money to get the rest of the books in this series! It’s that amazing! The rest of the books are going at the TOP of my wishlist and will remain there. This book has it all. The deadly sins, guns, fighting, love (even if not reciprocated).
