Hell Spawn (Shifter Squad #9) by J.C. Diem

Hell Spawn

Hell Spawn is the ninth and final book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem. This book is what all the others have been leading up too. This book is definitely more somber than the others but it needed to be.

Lexi, Reece, Kala, Flynn and the rest of the people they know, came into contact with, rescued and even all of humanity need to come together in order for their world to be saved. Kurt Jorgen makes it impossible for the humans to not know about the supernatural community after he starts his attacks. He wipes out several towns. Before long he’s taken out half a million people.

Lexi, Reece and the rest of their team try to stop Kurt and his minions. Lexi is actually able to surprise Kurt and wring his neck, effectively killing him. Only thing is, he doesn’t stay dead. None of them had a way of knowing that he was immortal just as she and her team were. Lexi retreats with the Oracles help and they come up with another plan. They call on ALL the resources they’ve come across. Cole, Bruce, Aiden, Leanne, the Oracle, and yes, even Nina’s pack. Shifters have a tendency to fight when they’re around rival packs.

Lexi has to take over their minds as the supreme alpha shifter and instill an order not to attack each other. Since she and Reece are the supreme alpha shifter couple, no one can resist them. Lexi leaves Reece, Flynn and Kala out of her orders. On one of their missions, her father, Philip Levine, is grabbed by the griffin golem and taken into the air. She does the only thing she can think of to save him. She makes him into an immortal just like Zeus is. He doesn’t seem to like it at first but gets used to it.

I didn’t think the author could outdo themselves compared to previous books. Man was I wrong. I absolutely loved this book. I’m sad it’s the end of the series…especially with how it ended. Hopefully the new series coming out in May is a spin off of this series and we get to read more, maybe from a different Champions POV, possibly?

This book had me crying at parts. There really were no happy moments in this book unless you count Kala killing a certain member they’d all wanted to kill a long time, and I’m not talking about Kurt Jorgen! 😀 This book will have you glued to the pages from beginning to end, not wanting to do anything else until you finish it. I couldn’t believe some of the things that were in here but it made an awesome read. Highly recommend this series!

Web Master (Shifter Squad #8) by J.C. Diem

Web Master

Web Master is the eighth book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem.  The books get better and better as they go! I was honestly stunned when I read who the main villain has been this whole time. And how long the treachery has been going on. I didn’t see it coming but once you learn who it is and realize stuff said and done in the last several books, it makes sense although it doesn’t add up on it’s own until you realize it! I laughed and cried while reading this book and was totally creeped out since there were spiders involved in this book. While reading it, I seriously felt like I had spiders crawling all over me.

I can’t wait to see where the ninth and final book of the series takes us when it’s released in March. I hope Lexi is able to succeed with her mission but right now, I’m not so sure that she’s going to be able to succeed. I’ll just have to wait and read the last book when it comes out later this year!!

This book is full of treachery. The Track and Kill Squad is summoned to PIA Headquarters. This is unusual since only those with level eight clearance is allowed there. Everyone but Mark are all level fives. They make it to headquarters and are given a bunch of information on EERI buildings. EERI needs to be eliminated and who better to do it than the TAK squad. But usually the “O” (Obliteration) Squad takes care of that. So it was kind of suspicious that the TAK squad was directed here. Too late they realize it was a set-up.

Kendricks, the leader of the O Squad, ends up being killed by a demon that was raised from Hell itself. The demon ends up killing Zeus, Lexi’s Rottweiler friend. Lexi is filled with rage. Her werewolf backs down and the vampire and necromancer parts of her work together. Together they end up summoning ghosts and killing the demon. Then, they bring Zeus back from the dead. He’s still Zeus but he’s something much more different and terrifying now. We learn more about what he’s become when the team goes back to the PIA headquarters.

All hell breaks loose at the PIA headquarters. Part of Zeus’ powers, which I’m sure there are more, are revealed. A zombie and ghost within the PIA’s walls and shields are revealed by Lexi and the team. A demon appears. The mastermind behind all the deception and the orchestrator of the appending apocalypse is revealed. We learn part, as again I’m sure there’s more, of Laurylane’s gift to the TAK Squad, including Mark.

Vampire Matriarch (Shifter Squad #7) by J.C. Diem

Vampire Matriarch

This is the seventh book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem. This series gets better as it goes. We have several new characters in this book and I honestly don’t like any of them except Lauryl. While most of them are exterminated, not all are and I wish they would be taken out by the TAK squad but who knows, they might be. 🙂

Lexi takes off on her suicide mission to kill her mother. But it doesn’t work out the way that she had planned. Katrina and her minions end up getting the best of her and she becomes the first true hybrid. She’s part vampire, part wolf and part necromancer but she doesn’t understand where the necromancer comes from. (We learn about it later in this book and was I shocked at reading it!)

Lexi ends up wanting to cause Reece the same pain he caused her so she was originally going to wipe out his entire pack. But then changes to where she wants him made into a hybrid like her and he can suffer the same fate as her. When she became the hybrid, she became emotionless and didn’t care about anything. Only her plan backfired on her. He wasn’t emotionless. Instead he felt it all. He admits to Lexi that he wasn’t in control of his mind and that he really did love her. Only she doesn’t believe him.

Things are strained between them. They end up following Katrina to take out a rival vampire nest only it turns out to be Mark, Kala, Flynn, Phillip and a Necromancer. Katrina and her nest, minus Lexi and Reece are killed. Lexi and Reece are kidnapped by a woman clad in leather who we later learn was a champion of Fate’s in another version of Earth who had been sent there to talk to Reece and Lexi. She lets Lexi into Reece’s memories and Lexi gets a glimpse of a reason why Reece didn’t want to get too close to her.

This story was a good one to read. Fate has been brought into it and this is definitely going to be getting much better as the series goes. I can’t wait until the 8th book comes out and I can read it as well. Reece is back in my good graces after this book but Lexi remains my favorite character. I like the introduction of one of the new people….the others I’m not so sure about.

Snake Charmer (Shifter Squad #6) by J.C. Diem

Snake Charmer

Snake Charmer is the sixth book in the Shifter Squad series by author J.C. Diem. We know that in the last book that Lexi had transformed into her wolf self and took off out of the compound. She was unable to deal with the pain of Garrett/Reece rejecting her for his true, full=blooded wolfshifter mate. She ends up in the wild in her wolf form for close to a month before Zeus shows up in the cave she’s been staying in after killing the bear who had been inhibiting it.

Hunters in the area end up shooting Zeus in the leg and him needing her help is what draws Lexi back to her human form. While still in wolf form though, she knocks the two hunters unconscious. She steals one of their clothes and I had to laugh at what she does to them. Since it’s winter, she was nice and built a fire so they wouldn’t freeze to death but she puts them in a spooning position and just imagining it made me laugh. (My daughter looked at me like I was nuts, btw.)

She steals their truck and ends up getting Zeus to a vet. While there, she ends up being detained by a couple deputies and is held until the sherriff gets there. He doesn’t like her story so she ends up behind bars. The sheriff refuses to let her make a call but it’s not necessary once Mark walks into the police station. He takes over “custody” of Lexi, even though she had given a fake name. They stop and pick Zeus up and then head back to the compound in Colorado.

That’s when they learn of a new case involving snakes biting people in the neck after these world’s deadliest snakes had gone missing from a snake park in Texas. They head to Texas and it’s not long before Flynn goes missing when they’re checking out a farm!

I’m going to leave the review right there. I think that should be enough to pull you into reading this series and this book. 🙂 I will say that this is the most interesting book of the series so far in my opinion. I’ve liked all the other books but I absolutely LOVED this book. We get to meet new people, new threats and friendships are tested more than ever before. I will admit I have laughed and cried while reading this book. The crying comes after what all I mentioned above so I won’t give it away here on what made me cry. Lexi is still my favorite character even though she’s a devious little thing! lol

Corpse Thieves (Shifter Squad #5) by J.C. Diem

This book was ah-mazing! Let’s face it, I’m addicted to J.C. Diem’s Shifter Squad series. I’ll hopefully have books six and seven in the next day or two to be able to read and review them as well! And then it’ll be time for her Mortis Vampire series. Haha. I’m liking this series the more I read it and I honestly hope it never ends. 😀 While I’m liking Lexi, Flynn and Kala more each book I’m really starting to not like Reece and I’m not sure on Mark after reading this book. I will say that I’m not sure I’m liking the way that Lexi and Reece’s personalities are changing in this book. They went from strong and likable characters to Lexi being needy and Reece being an ass. Not sure I’m liking the changes but we’ll see where they go.

The TAK Squad manages to capture the rogue shifter, which turns out to be Reece’s younger brother, Gareth. Turns out that Reece’s real name is Garrett. Mark didn’t want to completely strip him of his old life and left his real name as his last name. This makes Reece resent Mark for taking him from his family as new information comes to light. After dealing with and meeting his mother and pack, the TAK Squad leaves there to get a break and let Reece think about his looming decisions.

This book sees the TAK Squad heading for New Orleans at first to find Lexi’s mom to destroy her and stop the taint in her and Reece’s blood that’s slowly killing them. On the way there, they are re-routed to Oklahoma. Corpses are going missing from morgues and then children start going missing.  Finding Lexi’s mom is put on a back burner as the kidnappings are more pressing. Turns out that they are dealing with ghouls and are in a town that has werelions and other werecats inhibiting it.

When Lexi and Kala are checking out one of the cemeteries, some werelions show up and the Rex, aka alpha, orders Kala to go with him and she obliges, not really knowing what she’s doing. Lexi is swallowed up into the earth by ghouls pulling her down. She barely makes it out of there alive but not without realizing that she’s more abnormal than she was before. Reece and her renew their bond when he gets to the cemetery. Their bond magic heals Lexi as she was only minutes away from dying from blood loss.

Rogue Wolf (Shifter Squad #4) by J.C. Diem

Shifter Squad

This is the fourth book in the Shifter Squad series by Author J.C. Diem.

Lexi, Reece and the others return in the fourth installment. They are still staying at the inn from book three as they realize they’re going to be in the area longer. It’s Thanksgiving day. Everyone, except Kala, goes to where the body mentioned at the end of book three was found. They realize that it’s a succubus they’re dealing with. Not only do they have the succubus to worry about, they also have the rogue wolf to contend with. Lexi and Reece are sent to scout the camp area in Kentucky while the others stay in West Virginia at the base there, having left the inn after Kala’s disastrous Thanksgiving dinner.

Lexi and Reece split up during the search of the woods. Lexi gets visited by a park ranger who turns out to be a werebear but neither realizes it before he tries to kill her. In all fairness, she did pull her gun on him first. Lol. They start combing the woods while Mark is at the compound with Kala and Flynn trying to find the rogue wolf’s clan and where they’re hiding. Turns out the rogue wolf also has them under surveillance and he gets way too close for Lexi’s liking.

I think I’ve liked this book the best so far. You get more of a glimpse into Reece’s life as well as Lexi’s. You learn more about Kala, Flynn and Mark as well. I’m liking them all more and more as the series goes on. Definitely going to be looking forward to the fifth book in the series.

Dark Coven (Shifter Squad #3) by J.C. Diem

Dark Coven

This book was just as good as the first two books in the Shifter Squad series by J.C. Diem. With only having a week before the full moon, the Shifter Squad is sent to investigate mysterious disappearances that keep happening every year in a small town. Lexi, who has been reading in the PIA archives, realizes they are going against a coven of witches and warlocks. This unsettles Mark but doesn’t deter them since they are really the only team that can handle this assignment.

They stay at a bed and breakfast on the outside of the town. Lexi, who appears to have an affinity for magical things, can see the shimmering of a force field around the town when they cross over. Mark immediately begins bleeding. They stop the SUV and hurry to turn around. Once they cross the line again, the bleeding stops. They take him back to the bed and breakfast while the four of them go check out the town. Mark isn’t happy about having to sit this one out at all buts knows that they have it covered.

Kala and Lexi are paired together, much to Reece’s chagrin. The girls go into a cafe because they’re checking things out. Only Lexi realizes, as well as Kala, that the elderly lady behind the counter isn’t actually an elderly lady. They can see through the spell and realize that she’s one of the witches of the coven. While there waiting, a man comes in and they realize that he’s one of the warlocks. They talk about the tripped shield and can’t figure out why there wasn’t a body around because of the aneurysm that was supposed to happen if someone crossed the line and knew of them.

They get out of there when they realize they are getting suspicious of Lexi and Kala. Reece had parked the SUV on a side street as he and Flynn high tale it out of there and into the woods on the way to the bed and breakfast. Things go from bad to worse when Lexi ends up getting herself caught by the owner of the cafe they went into. Luckily, Lexi had made friends with a bunch of dogs and they come to her rescue followed by Reece, Kala and Flynn. Reece ends up carrying Lexi back to the inn. Things still aren’t at the worst at this point and they get a lot worse before the end of the book.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that author J.C. Diem has a new fan for life. I have the first book in the Mortis series to read now. I am hoping to get the rest of the books in the Shifter Squad series soon. I am seriously addicted to these books! The writing is amazing as is the world building. You can honestly see everything playing out in your mind as you’re reading the books. The characters are like everyday people except they are shifters as well.

Zombie King (Shifter Squad #2) by J.C. Diem

Zombie King

This is the second book in the Shifter Squad series by J.C. Diem. The first book is Seven Psychics.

Lexi Levine is eighteen years old. She was bitten by a dog when she was a baby and then she was bitten by Agent Reese Garrett who is a werewolf. This infects her with the werewolf virus and she’s already turned once. Her father knows of the news and isn’t happy that her boss, Mark, let her get “injured” while on the job and when he was supposed to be protecting her.

Her father left the mission he was on and was going to her. She went by herself to pick him up from the airport in Denver and takes him back to their compound in the mountains. Things are tense. She doesn’t scan her hand until her father promises not to kill anyone. He begrudgingly agrees with a nonexistent but known “yet” at the end of his promise. He goes inside and punches Mark which sends all of them into motion. The other three agents: Reece, Kala and Flynn all wanting her father’s head and her pulling her gun and pointing it directly at Reece’s face since he was closest. Mark calls them off and they all back down.

Flynn and Kala are dismissed and the other four talk. Reece states he can rectify the situation by marrying Lexi. This sets Lexi off and she takes off to the outdoor gun range where she sits in turmoil and despair. Her father offers to kill Reece but she states that if she wanted him dead that she’d kill him herself. She takes her father back to the airport a few days later and then it’s off to New Orleans to kill the Zombie King.

There’s a man running around New Orleans raising corpses from the dead. The team received a call from a voodoo priestess who knew about the PSI. She only talks to Lexi when they go to her shop. The Zombie King gets more desperate as time goes on. Is the team able to contain him? Can they contain all the corpses he’s raised and stop a massive takeover of New Orleans? Or will they fail?

I’m loving author J.C. Diem. I love the writing style, the characters, the world this book is set in. I love that the characters are normal people who have a “condition” but they’re all a family. The first book was a great read and this book was as well. Definitely worth the $3.99 paid for it! Now to get the third book in the series!!

Seven Psychics (Shifter Squad #1) by J.C. Diem

Seven Psychics

This book was awesome! Alexis, or Lexi as she likes to be called, is a great sniper. Her father is the best sniper that the Army has and he has trained her well. She is 17 years old, only a few months shy of being 18. Her father, Phillip, is on a mission somewhere so she’s home alone by herself. Each day she goes to the Army base and uses the indoor and outdoor range. On this particular fateful day that will ultimately change her life, she is at the range showing off, which she knows her father would disapprove of it he was there.

After going inside the indoor range after retrieving her target, she is approached by a fan and then by a man wearing a suit whom she pegs as a fed since he’s the only one dumb enough to be wearing a jacket in the Texas heat. Not knowing who he is, she is cautious and refuses to leave the indoor range with him. He makes a call and talks to her father before he hands the phone over to her. They talk a minute or two and then she leaves with him since her father knows him and trusts him.

He lets her drive the SUV to her house. She packs a bag for a while and they go to the base and board a private jet. They eventually make it back to the private base where she’ll be staying with Mark and the three others in his squad. Lexi is about to get thrown into a world in which she didn’t know existed, the paranormal. There was an institution break the week before. Seven people with psychic abilities broke out and were on the run but weren’t leaving Denver since that’s where they lived prior to being locked up.

Each of them is named for a deadly sin since they each make their victims out one of the sins. They are each slowly and systematically taken out but not without some casualties along the way. What all happens along the road to taking out these menaces to society? Who all gets caught in the crosshairs? And how does this temporary arrangement turn into a full-time one? Who is going to survive the wrath of Lexi’s father when he gets back home and who will meet their end?

This book was awesome. I bought it yesterday and was so in love with the description and idea of this book that I started reading it immediately.  I finished it earlier today and I seriously can’t wait until I have money to get the rest of the books in this series! It’s that amazing! The rest of the books are going at the TOP of my wishlist and will remain there. This book has it all. The deadly sins, guns, fighting, love (even if not reciprocated).
